Perhaps you are reading his as you want to discover the difference between counselling and hypnotherapy because you are thinking about working through a particular issue or you simply want to discover how to be more of who you are. You may be a therapist yourself and wanting to research these differences.
I am a hypnotherapist and coach. I have done undertaken training in counselling/psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and coaching. I have been in therapy, psychotherapy. I went to see a cognitive behavioural therapist. I have been hypnotised and been coached (and still am coached) by the some of the leading coaches in the world.
This article is a mixture of own personal experience of the difference between counselling and hypnotherapy as well as from a professional viewpoint.
It's important to note that each person is different and one approach may be more suitable to another. So trust your gut instinct. Speak to different therapists, hypnotherapist or even coaches. Ask questions, explore who resonates with you and what you are looking for. Are you simply looking for a friendly ear to vent. Or are you looking for someone who will walk with you on your journey. Challenge when needed. Say things that other people are too afraid to. Someone who doesn't get caught up in your stories. Someone who believes in you and offers you a space of empathy, growth, empowerment and possibilities.
Many people come to hypnotherapy as a last resort - they have tried counselling or psychotherapy however didn't get the results they wanted.
People sometimes underestimate hypnosis, believing it is restricted to weight loss, stop smoking and public speaking. However, in recent years it has become a dynamic therapeutic process which can really make a difference in someone's life. Not only does hypnosis help people to understand themselves, actions and thoughts much more quickly than traditional talking therapies it also helps to create powerful changes in their lives.
I decided to write this article to explain the differences between hypnotherapy and counselling.
Counselling is a space where a person (client or patient as some therapists calls them) meets with a counsellor once a week for 10 weeks, or if they are undertaking psychotherapy it can be a process which lasts up to 3 or more years attending once, twice or even three times a week.
Counselling is not proactive or dynamic. Talking, support and reflecting is mainly what happens in counselling and psychotherapy and although these are very important aspects as some people do need a safe space to do that. I feel a fundamental part of the process is missing in traditional counselling and that is giving clients the tools to make the changes in their life.
Limitations of counselling - Some of my clients who have previously had counselling before they work with me said they understand the issue and themselves more however the therapist didn't support them to make the necessary changes before just understanding.
Hypnotherapy is a process which is much more proactive and dynamic than counselling and psychotherapy as hypnosis goes straight to the unconscious and subconscious part of the mind quickly and much more effectively than traditional taking therapies.
From this place change can and does happen very quickly and effectively. While some people do experience profound change within one session, although generally I work with people for around six sessions - depending on what they wish to achieve.
Like any process, there are many different types of Hypnotherapist and approaches. If you have a complex issue such as sexual problems, sexual abuse, addictions or eating disorders it's important you do your research and work with a hypnotherapist who is qualified to work within these areas as unfortunately some hypnotherapy training is very inadequate.
Limitation of hypnotherapy - Some hypnotherapist are not trained to a high level and become jack of all trades - working with stop smoking to sexual abuse - and are not actually experience to work with deep emotional issue. Some of my clients who have been to a hypnotherapist who wasn't experienced before they came to me say - the hypnotherapist said they only needed one session - to heal sexual abuse or to fix erectile dysfunction.

Where do hypnotherapy and counselling fit in the 21st Century and our modern lives?
During my counselling and psychotherapy training six years ago I found the training outdated, stuck in the world of Freud and Klein, it was very much focussed on the past, using transference as the tool - which takes many years for a client to overcome their problems. We as a society have moved on, while I respect the work that some of the pioneers did I really believe that therapy needs to be updated so reflect these changes and this is where hypnotherapy comes in - a powerful, dynamic and creative therapeutic tool which can effectively and quickly help people.
During my hypnotherapy training ten years ago I found the training to be very limited and doesn't dive in deep enough for hypnotherapist to fully support people to heal and overcome many complex issues. However I see this is beginning to change and the some hypnotherapy training is becoming more updated to include therapeutic understanding.

I was on a forum for Hypnotherapist the other day and someone asked the question "what can hypnotherapy be use for, what can it help with?"
It's an interesting question and the answer is hypnotherapy can be used for almost anything. It really depends on what the hypnotherapist has decided to specialise in.
Historically hypnotherapy was seen as a mere tool to use for weight loss, phobias, confidence building and stop smoking. Now Hypnotherapy has really taken off and become a high trusted advanced therapeutic approach which can really help make wonderful changes into people's life.
In the right hands hypnotherapy can be a creative and transformational tool and can help with a wide range of issues, and problems.
Some hypnotherapist I guess are a jack of trade and they work with all issues. While other hypnotherapist specialise in specific areas.
People come to see for me for many issues, however I specialise in working with sexual problems, addictions, anxiety, coaching (which naturally forms a part of my work anyway), blushing, confidence building and stress management. I also work with professional and executives on professional development.
The areas specialise in is based upon my training, further training and my understanding of the topics. This is very important when working with addictions and sexual problems
Hypnotherapy is a modern alternative to the traditional talking therapies such as counselling and psychotherapy as most people receive results, understanding, awareness much quicker and effective than these traditional talking therapies.
Although it's important to remember that hypnotherapy is not a magic wand, no one can do this work for you, you can not be forced to "change your habits" it's important you are committed to the process as well. If are committed the results can be life-changing.

I thought of the title for this article when I was out walking in the countryside. So many people wait until everything is perfect to enjoy life and feel happy.
Life isn't like that.
The summer in the UK this year is pretty much non-existent. I woke up again this morning to grey clouds, wind and lots of rain. Feel edgy as I needed exercise but not very motivated to go outside due to the cold and wet weather.
So with a heavy heart I put on my water proofs and decided to go for a walk - living in Somerset I have plenty of fields and country side around me. So pleased I did as it was beautiful, despite the rain. Flowers were blooming, the smell of wild garlic was abundant in the air and the sound of the rain against the tree branches was so very relaxing.
If I had waited for the prefect conditions to venture out for a walk I would have missed this beautiful experience.
This got me thinking about opportunities people miss as they are waiting for the perfect conditions.
As a hypnotherapist in London I see so many people waiting for their perfect conditions to really live life. Waiting for the perfect relationship, waiting until they are financially secure, waiting for this or that to be sorted. I will be happy when my next promotion comes in, or when my next holiday is due. Many feel stressed and anxious.
Life is about right now, with all that it entails. Start each day embracing it regardless what is happening and see it where it takes you.
There is a quote I like and it goes something like "I'm not perfect but I am perfectly flawed" and we can transfer that to life "My life isn't perfect but it's perfectly flawed".

I rarely watch TV, and last night I watched a show regarding and woman and sex toys. Anne Summers recruited a group of women off the street from a range of background, sexual experience and age to create a sex toy they would then create and sell. Most sex toys for women are apparently created by men.
On the show was a woman who never had an orgasm. In the past she faked it by making all the right movements, and sounds. The Product Manager at Anne Summers provided her with sex toys to help get an orgasm but alas nothing worked.
I felt the pressure she was putting on herself and it was obvious to me the blocks were not physical but emotional. No wonder these toys didn't work! They shouldn't be used as substitute for a partner or a deeper sexual experience and connection.
It was incredibly brave and courageous for her to share this, and then it was later revealed that she was also sexually abused as a child. This was the first time she talked about it and it felt she was on a personal journey to achieve the exclusive orgasm and this was part of that journey.
One in four women in the UK do not orgasm.
Our earlier experiences shape who we become as adults and our sexual identity. If a person suffers from a traumatic experiences, is not in touch with emotions, or finds it difficult to connect with others this is going to manifest in sexual experience - whether it's low sex drive, experiencing painful sex or unable to orgasm.
Within each woman is the ability to open their hear, mind, body and spirit to reach their sexual peak regardless of age and experience. I was touched by an older women in the group who was 69 who still had an amazing sex life with her husband. She was so open and had a lovely sexual essence.

As a London Hypnotherapist I have worked with many clients with my creativity hypnotherapy programme and it's amazing to see as they remove their blocks, thinking patterns and open up to their inner world of creativity how they begin to shine.
In society we often underestimate the need to nurture our creative side but being creative is a natural part of being human. Being creative is not something that "happens" or you can't set out and say "today I am going to be more creative". It's an organic process, which happens naturally but you can give it a helping hand.
Here are eight tips to help you to be more creative in all aspects of your life.
1 - Stop wasting time - Internet and TV
Do you hide from life from behind your smart phone or laptop, or you enjoy watching reality TV shows as it helps you escape from your life?
Turn it off now! The internet and TV numbs you, and the more time you spend engaged with these the more dull, numb and uninteresting you become.
2 - Take time out for you
Go for a walk, do yoga or sit and meditate. Take time and allow everything to just be. Stop and smell the flowers, be moved by the sun setting or the stars at time.
3 - Dance
Dancing helps you to get into you body, and this is where creativity lives. Go out and dance, try 5 rhythms dancing, or when you are home turn your music up and let your body do the talking!
Remember dance like no one is watching and dance like everyone is watching!
4 - Eat healthily
You are what you eat, if you eat heavy and processed foods you will feel heavy and your creative energy will become stuck. Nurture yourself with fresh fruit and veggies.
5 - Understand your body clock
We all have different body clocks, I am more creativity in the early morning and again during the late afternoon, so I use this time to work.
6 - Forgive yourself
The more you hold onto your past the more your body becomes blocked and stuck. By accepting and forgiving yourself your body will be more open to the creative spark which is there waiting to be released!
7 - You are the artist of your own life
You are the artist of your own life, so each day ensure you spend time nurturing who you are. Get a sketch book, and go sit somewhere quite and just sketch, or get a pen and paper and allow the words to flow from you - just write and see where the words take you.
8 - Putting the above into actions
It's easy to read this article on tips to be more creativity - however it's also easy to go away and not put any of these into action.
I challenge you to act on these tips for two weeks. Turn your TV off and shut down your computer and really start to live your life, the more you live the more creative you will be. Your special life is a gift and honour it by really living and being in this beautiful world.
Notice how your life changes as you become happier, balanced and much more creative.
