Why do some people pull their hair out?
Many people with trichotillomania experience an urge, or an itch to pull out their hair and they feel anxious or stressed until they do. Each person who pulls their hair out experiences it different ways; some people yank out clumps of hair, others pull one hair at a time, others feel and look for hair which is damage, and others eat and chew their hair.
In most cases hair pulling starts in puberty, the teenage years and it becomes a habit in adult life, or a way the person has learnt how to deal with stress or anxiety. The urge or itch of the scalp is difficult to ignore, a sense of tension building up before pulling hair out and once done feels a sense of relief and tension afterwards.
What is trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is the medical name given to hair pulling, it is a condition which involves pulling, snapping or twisting of hair from varies part of the body. Trichotillomania is often an automatic response on an unconscious level as people do not realise they are pulling out their hair until after they have done it.
In Linda's experience hair pulling and trichotillomania often starts in childhood after a specific event, trauma, stress, anxiety or depression. It can be part of OCD, self harm or just a habit.
Some pull their hair from their head, eye lashes and body hair.
In some cases the trichotillomania becomes severe. Pulling out hair can cause bold spots, and in extreme cases hair balls if the hair is swallowed as it can cause blockages in the body which can cause major health problems
Hair pulling Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a very useful tool for addressing and working hair pulling and when combined with counselling, NLP, coaching, mindfulness, cognitive thought processes, and the mind and body connection it becomes much more effective in helping you to control and stop pulling out your hair.
Hypnosis can help to address and change the response to triggers which causes the hair pulling (e.g. stress, anxiety, boredom) and replace it with a more positive habit.
What you can expect to achieve
A message from Linda
Many of my clients come to me as a last resort, they have tried CBT, counselling, and other methods without success. They continue to pull their hair out and have bold stops on their head. Some are very frustrated, ashamed and embarrassed about their hair pulling.
I have helped others when other methods didn't work. I also provide a non-judgemental space for you to work with me and provide support as you take the necessary steps and action to stop hair pulling.
Although I mainly work with women, I have also worked with men who pull their hair out.
As a ethical therapist I only work with people I know I can help, so the first step is to contact me to discuss your situation and what you want to achieve and if we both feel we can work together we will schedule your first appointment.
