As part of being human and our experience upon this earth we have been gifted with the ability to feel and experience life on many different levels - the mind, body and heart. With this experience we feel emotions - from joy, happiness through to anxiety, anger and fear. I see so many people trying to avoid, reject or hide from their feelings. They live in their mind and become disconnected from the body and as a result, they also disconnect from the joy and happiness as well.
I have been there too. There was a huge period of my life from childhood into my early thirties where anxiety ruled my life. As a young child I didn't understand what I was feeling but remember lying in bed wide awake in the dark hours into the early morn. The anxiety continued until my early thirties when I decided rather than hiding from my emotions, or trying to suppress them through drinking or emotional eating I would meet them face to face.
What I discovered was that these emotions and the anxiety I was feeling were simply a message from my body. A message that something was unresolved, I was living my life out of fear rather than love and that it was time to move forward in my life. Once I listened to my body I discovered what I needed to do to move forward in my life and finally break free from the anxiety which plagued me for such a long time.
Our body has it's own unique intellectual system - this isn't some new age pop psychology - it's backed up by science. The muscles and body hold on to memories. These body memories can dictate how you live your life, choices you make and the actions you take. Just like our mind can give us messages so too can our bodies.
Listen to your emotions and body
It's easy to think that situations, work, people and events cause anxiety and stress. There are of course situations which are not pleasant, difficult, awful and heart breaking and these naturally have an impact on our inner world. We are after all humans and not just thinking machines.
It's our perception, judgements, thoughts and how we respond to our past and present experiences which cause our emotions to go into overdrive. Emotions, anxiety and fear are not something to hide away from for perhaps they are providing you with a message from within - to take the next step to resolve whatever it is that is holding you back.
What if the anxiety, stress and fear you experience is a mirror reminding you return your awareness back into your inner world and take action.
Give yourself permission to feel
Learn to accept and embrace your emotions. They are real and they are valid. There is a lot of new age pop psychology which states that our thoughts create our emotions - we are simply feeling our thoughts. While this is true on one side - it doesn't account for the intelligence and memory system of the body and the fact that we are so much more that our mind and thoughts and nor does it support modern day science and research of the way our bodies operate.
It's so important to get out of your mind and return your awareness down to your body. Emotions are there for a reason and are a natural part of life. Underneath the emotion may be an important message you need to hear in order to move forward in your life. Whether it's sexual anxiety, fear of blushing, generalised anxiety, or stress just pause, take a breath and learn to listen to the message underneath the anxiety.
What your emotions may be telling you
When you learn to listen to what your emotions are telling you remember to take the next appropriate action. Otherwise the emotions, anxiety, stress and fear will continue to be a part of your life in a dysfunctional and destructive way.
