What causes low self-esteem
Lots of people experience the occasional lack of confidence and self-esteem at some point in their lives. However for some people low confidence and self-esteem becomes ingrained into part of their personality.
Self-beliefs form how you feel about yourself and although they are only opinions your mind sees them as fact. Beliefs are developed from your experiences in life from childhood, school, friends, work and from family. If your experiences were negative your self-beliefs and how you see yourself will most likely be negative too.
Experiences from trauma, failing to meet your parents, school or friends’ expectations, little or no praise, warmth, affection or
interest, belonging to a minority group and being prejudiced against, or being the different one all can have a direct impact on self-esteem and how you feel about yourself.
Low self-esteem can also be caused by work place bullying, traumatic experiences, relationship issues, or stress and anxiety.
Why is self-esteem important?
Self-esteem is basically how you value yourself and how important you think you are. It is central to everything you do from choices in career, friends, and relationships.
With a healthy level of self-esteem you have the confidence and self-worth to make the right choices in your life in:
