Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk about positive thinking and positive affirmations.
Positive thinking is an area which is misunderstood. It's not as simple as "thinking" positive. It's a little more complex than that. It's also about creating a positive attitude and learning how to create positive outcomes.
Thoughts are the by-product of our actions, past experiences, self-worth, self-belief and confidence. So it's essential when working with positive thinking to also work with this other aspects.
You can learn how to master the process and skill of positive thinking and gaining a positive attitude.
We have over 60 to 70K of thoughts a day, and many of these thoughts are repeated day in and day out. Some thoughts stem from our childhood, parents, teachers, or friends, such as: "you are not good enough", "you are stupid", your sister/brother is so much more brighter than you", "you have to work hard to get what you want" or "don't trust people".
Some people believe the way to manage these thoughts is to avoid them or to push them away. All that does is invest more energy, focus and time on the thoughts and
Negative thoughts are like plants - the more we feed and water them they become bigger and grow stronger. Some try to manage these thoughts by avoiding or pushing them away. All they are doing is investing more energy, focus and time on them and as a result the thoughts become stronger.
What if I told you that you can relax and stop focusing on the thoughts by accepting that they are. That's all. Nothing else is needed! No positive affirmations or no positive thinking. When you accept the thought they relax and soften and no longer feel so difficult.
This of course takes skill and practice. Focus on what you DO want and not on what you don't.
I invite you to start today. If you have a thought accept it's there. Then focus on what you DO want (and not what you don't want).
An example of this:
Jean holds a senior positive at a large bank. She has recently been promoted and is feeling a little out of her depth. She has started blushing in senior meeting. Rather going into the meeting focusing that she is going to blush she will focus on going into the meeting feeling calm and confident.
